The second-generation 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe has grown up. It’s also grown physically, as BMW succumbs to the seemingly irresistible industry trend of making cars bigger than they were before.

The most practical member of the new 4 Series family, the Gran Coupe, has seating for five, four doors, and a liftback trunk lid while boasting an improved, though still not perfect, cabin that’s nearly identical to that of the 3 Series.

The massive and controversial front grille overshadows everything else, however, and continues to divide opinion. In non-M guise, two sublime powertrains are available, with up to 382 horsepower generated by the M440i’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, now supplemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

Traditionalists will love BMW’s adherence to rear-wheel drive, but for our week-long test drive, we spent time in the AWD M440i xDrive.

As before, the Audi A5 Sportback remains the BMW’s primary rival, with a left-field choice also present in the Kia Stinger. The Audi offers a bigger trunk and standard all-wheel drive, but the BMW, in our experience, is more enjoyable to drive thanks to a rearward bias even on the xDrive models.

Aimed at those who are tired of a traditional three-box sedan, the 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe is a unique take on style and practicality in one consummate package.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Two turbocharged powertrains are on the menu here, starting with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the 430i model that makes 255 horsepower. This base powertrain is available only with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The more powerful upgrade engine is a 382-hp 3.0-liter inline-six that is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system and comes standard with an all-wheel drive.

We haven’t had a chance to test-drive the new 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe with either of these configurations but we’ll update this story with driving impressions and test results when we do.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA has not released fuel economy estimates for the 2022 4-series Gran Coupe yet and we haven’t had a chance to test the new car on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route. For more information about the 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Cabin styling closely resembles that of the 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe and convertible, with a driver-focused dashboard that angles the climate controls and infotainment display slightly toward the left.

Materials are top-notch and the interior looks quite premium, but rival sedans such as the new Mercedes-Benz C-class offer more dramatic interior designs. The rear seat is roomier here than on the two-door 4-series model, but headroom is snug compared to the 3-series sedan because of the Gran Coupe’s fastback roofline.

The 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe‘s trunk should offer far more space for luggage, groceries, and other cargo than the two-door models, too, but we won’t know exactly how much more room until we get one in for testing.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All models come with a large 10.3-inch infotainment display as well as a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard and work wirelessly; in-dash navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a Wi-Fit hotspot are also included. The standard stereo is a 10-speaker system but a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo is optional.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Basic driver-assistance features such as automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are standard but more advanced tech requires adding the Driving Assistance Professional package, which includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
