While Land Rover has brought a new Defender to life, which brings the robust and capable model into the modern age, the car remains a cheaper alternative for those that are happy to stay more in the mainstream.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen on the other hand is the equivalent of a Birkin bag on wheels. It exists because it’s a visual representation of its owner’s desire to be different.
The extended options list for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen includes ten new paint colors (including copper orange paint), 64-color ambient lighting, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a towing hitch. In addition, the latest G-Class is available in both Exclusive and AMG Line, while buyers can choose from four interior packages.
Mercedes-Benz has yet to unveil pricing for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, but we’re expecting the official US specs to arrive soon. The buzz surrounding the all-electric EQG Concept is still strong, and it seems off-road enthusiasts are excited to find out what’s in store for the next-gen G-Class.
The competition is not resting on their laurels either. GMC, Rivian, and Bollinger are waiting on the horizon, and an all-electric G-Class will settle the score on who is the best all-electric off-roading SUV.
PERFORMANCE
Mercedes says the EQG is off-road capable as it is based on the same ladder-frame chassis as the regular 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. It has independent suspension up front and a solid rear axle, which Mercedes has redesigned to accommodate electric motors.
Power comes from four electric motors, one at each wheel. Each motor can operate independently depending on the conditions, whether on-road or off. A two-speed transmission sends power to the wheels, so figure two sets of gears per wheel.
Details on the battery pack, weight, and power output are still pending, but the EQG’s output will likely top that of the standard gas-powered G550, which pumps out 416 hp.
