The 2024 Honda Civic hatchback comes in LX, Sport, EX-L, and Sport Touring trim levels. Base prices range from the mid-$20,000s to the low $30,000s, including the destination charge to ship the car from the Greensburg, Indiana, factory that builds it to your local dealership.

For this Civic hatchback review, I test-drove the Sport Touring in Southern California. The only option was the extra-cost Boost Blue paint, bringing the test vehicle’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price to $33,000, including the $1,095 destination charge. Honda provided the car for this Civic hatchback review.

Drive and Performance 8.0/10

The 22024 Honda Civic’s handling strikes a good balance between practicality and pleasure. Steering is well-weighted and allows for easy maneuvering in crowded parking lots, but this Honda also happily eats up corners at higher speeds. The slightly firm suspension can lead to occasional dips in ride quality, but riding in the Civic is mostly comfortable. The Si is particularly spry around curves thanks to sporty performance upgrades.

The standard Civic is equipped with a 150-horsepower four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Si model comes with a 200-horsepower turbo-four engine and a six-speed manual. All Civics come with front-wheel drive. The base engine is sufficient for most driving scenarios. The Civic isn’t very quick, but you can take it out on the highway without issues, and the CVT operates smoothly and helps to ensure impressive fuel economy. The Si’s turbo-four adds a welcome dose of power, and this model’s six-speed manual provides quick and precise shifts.

We review the Honda Civic Hybrid and performance-oriented Honda Civic Type R separately.

Fuel Economy 10.0/10

The 2024 Honda Civic gets fantastic fuel economy estimates for a compact car. The LX gets an EPA-estimated 32 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway, the Sport trim gets 31/39 mpg city/highway, and the Si gets 27/37 mpg city/highway.

Thinking of leasing a Honda Civic?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $2,287 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $90 a month on a 36-month lease.

Interior 7.8/10

The 2024 Honda Civic has an attractive, upscale and well-crafted interior. There are a few visible hard plastic pieces, but this is common for the segment. Most of the cabin looks and feels high-end for a compact car. With seating for five, the Civic provides plenty of room in both rows for adults to sit comfortably. The front seats are supportive and well-cushioned, but they could use more lumbar support. The Si’s sport seats are well-bolstered and provide much-appreciated additional thigh support.

This Honda also impresses when it comes to cargo. The Civic sedan’s trunk has 14.8 cubic feet of storage space, and the hatchback provides 24.5 cubes.

Value 8.6/10

The 2024 Honda Civic has an average value rating for the compact car class. We determine value based on the vehicle’s estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle’s MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 9.5/10

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2024 Civic a five-star overall safety rating. The Civic comes with a good number of driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

Quality and Reliability 82.0/100

The 2024 Honda Civic does not have a predicted reliability score at the time of writing.

Critics’ Rating 9.3/10

The 2024 Honda Civic receives a critics’ rating that is good for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.
