The 2024 Toyota Corolla is a well-built and versatile car that’s designed to get you from place to place with minimal fuss. It isn’t especially spacious or exciting to drive, but it impresses with a smooth ride, good fuel efficiency and a long list of standard features.

Drive & Performance 5.9/10

The Corolla isn’t especially thrilling to drive, but its small size and light steering make it easy to maneuver in crowded parking lots and tight urban environments. The Toyota’s suspension is tuned for comfort, which affords a smooth ride that’s sure to please occupants on long hauls.

The standard 2024 Toyota Corolla and hatchback have one engine option: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. It comes paired with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). This engine is adequate for driving around town and making the occasional highway excursion, but it feels sluggish when pulling away from a stop and when passing or merging.

Making the run from zero to 60 mph takes a leisurely 9 seconds, according to Toyota, and the engine tends to drone when the accelerator is pressed hard. On the plus side, the CVT is unobtrusive and mimics a traditional automatic fairly well. If you’re looking for extra performance, go for the more powerful GR Corolla, which we review separately.

Fuel Economy 9.7/10

The 2024 Toyota Corolla gets good gas mileage for the compact car segment. Depending on configuration, the Corolla gets an EPA-estimated 30-32 mpg in the city and 38-41 mpg on the highway.

Interior 6.7/10

The interior design of the 2024 Toyota Corolla focuses on function over form. The cabin is well-constructed, ergonomic and fairly inoffensive, but many rivals’ interiors feel more modern and upscale. Build materials are of good quality for the most part, but there are lots of hard plastics that are a reminder you’re in a value-oriented car. The Corolla seats five people. Upfront, the seats are comfortable and supportive, and the available sport seats are effective in helping you stay put around tight curves thanks to their additional side bolstering. Head- and legroom is plentiful, as well. The back row is on the cramped side, and tall adults will likely feel constrained by the tight legroom.

The Corolla has below-average cargo room for the compact car class. The sedan has 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space, which is enough for stowing a few pieces of carry-on luggage or a large load of groceries. The rear seats fold down, which makes stowing longer items easier. The hatchback model has slightly more room, providing 17.8 cubic feet of space in the rear cargo area. The hatchback’s folding rear seats and wide cargo opening make it easier to stow larger items.

Value 9.4/10

The 2024 Toyota Corolla has a good value rating for the compact car class. We determine value based on the vehicle’s estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle’s MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 9.3/10

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2024 Corolla an overall rating of five out of five stars, and we like the base Corolla’s standard safety features, which include forward collision warning, traffic-sign recognition and lane-keep assist.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. This LATCH system is among the easiest and most versatile to use.

Quality and Reliability 76.0/100

The 2024 Toyota Corolla does not have a predicted reliability score at the time of writing.

Critics’ Rating 7.1/10

The 2024 Toyota Corolla receives a critics’ rating that is below average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.
