2023 BMW X7

The 2023 BMW X7 brings new styling, upgraded in-cabin technology, and a boost in power for the base model. Last year’s M50i trim has been dropped in favor of a new M60i trim level, which slots in above the base xDrive40i.

Styling updates include a reworking of the 2023 BMW X7’s front, which still includes a large version of BMW’s signature kidney grille with chrome elements on the vertical slats and available illuminated elements that stand out at night. The big grille looks more in place here on the taller X7 than it does on BMW’s sedans. The headlight clusters look drastically different, with the LED lighting elements shifted around for a much thinner appearance. Additional creases and folds around the nose make it much busier. At the rear, new taillights with 3D design elements have also been slimmed down compared to last year. Wheels are also now available at up to 23 inches in size.

ENGINE AND IMPLEMENTATION

The entry-level 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i is powered by a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six-cylinder, and the M50i has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 523 horses. The Alpina XB7 has a specially tuned version of that V-8, which develops 630 horsepower. All three engines pair with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Every X7 rides on an air suspension with adaptive dampers, and the chassis can be further enhanced with the available rear-axle steering and active anti-roll bars that reduce body motions. Both features are standard on the M60i, which has a sportier suspension setup by default. The smallest wheels on the X7 measure 21 inches in diameter, but BMW now also offers 23-inchers for the first time.

ENERGY AND REAL WORLD-MPG

The 2023 X7 has updated powertrains, and BMW hasn’t yet released fuel-economy ratings for them yet. Once those estimates are announced, and we have the opportunity to test the new variants on the 75-mph highway fuel-economy route that is part of our extensive testing regimen, we can evaluate the SUV’s real-world mpg. INTERIOR, CONVENIENCE, AND BOOTH

Inside, the 2023 BMW X7 features a new display setup with a single piece of curved glass that houses both the instrument cluster and infotainment screens. This is similar to the design that Mercedes has used for some time, but the curved glass makes it more driver-centric. The cluster display measures 12.3 inches, while the central display is 14.9 inches. The X7’s instrument panel works with the navigation system to offer augmented reality functions that can display directional arrows over a live view of the road to give the driver clearer directions. The xDrive40i also comes with a new standard vegan (read: synthetic leather) upholstery that BMW calls “Sensafin,” while leather is still available as an option.

IN-VEHICLE INFOTAINMENT AND INTERCONNECTIONS

The X7’s infotainment system–featuring the latest iDrive 8 software­–primarily operates through a 14.9-inch touchscreen that’s housed in the curved glass panel atop the dash. The system can also be operated by a large rotary knob on the center console as well as through gesture controls that are more gimmicky than useful. Along with a Wi-Fi hotspot (subscription required), every X7 is available with BMW’s Digital Key that allows user to remotely control vehicle functions via a smartphone app. A more powerful Harman/Kardon stereo and wireless charging are optional features.
