The upcoming 2023 BMW X5 is expected to arrive with a refresh for the new model year. The current X5 has been on sale since 2019, so the fifth model year should see the midsize SUV arrive with some changes.
Based on prototypes that we’ve seen testing, the 2023 X5 should receive a few noticeable changes on the outside. The SUV’s front end is expected to get a sharper front fascia, more angular headlights, and smaller grilles. At the back, the new X5 should receive a revised rear bumper and updated taillights. The upcoming 2023 X5 M will arrive with the same changes but feature larger air intakes and more muscular fenders.
We haven’t seen the interior of the upcoming 2023 BMW X5 yet. We expect the midsize SUV to arrive with BMW’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment system. The new system should see the SUV arrive with a digital instrument cluster and a large touchscreen that’s designed to appear like a single unit. Beyond this change, we expect the 2023 X5 to have the same overall design with a thin row of analog buttons, pentagonal air vents, and clean lines.
The midsize SUV is rumored to gain a standard mild-hybrid system, which should bring extra power. Currently, the 2023 BMW X5 comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that makes 335 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid X5 is available that comes with the same turbo six-cylinder engine, but adds an electric motor and a hybrid battery pack into the equation. The engine is rated at 389 hp and has an electric range of 31 miles. BMW could increase the PHEV’s range for 2023.
Both the 2023 BMW X5 M50i and X5 M come with a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that’s rated at up to 617 hp. Rumors indicate that the X5 M could receive a new engine with the S68 codename. The V8 engine could arrive with a mild-hybrid system for more power. The X5 comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In the current X5 M models, the S63 engine delivers a total of 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. For the facelift version, rumors suggest that the numbers will be increased to as much as 750 horsepower. This means that while the X5 M will be pushed up on the market, the M60i could be a replacement for the current X5 M, so maybe it will deliver around 550 horsepower.
The 2023 BMW X5 is expected to go on sale later this fall. With a refresh, the midsize SUV should be more expensive than the current model that’s on sale. Pricing for the X5 ranges from $61,595 to $93,025.
The BMW X5 will compete against other midsize SUVs that include the Volvo XC90, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Genesis GV80, Porsche Cayenne, and Audi Q7.
