The redesigned 2024 Honda HR-V subcompact SUV has been upgraded to the Civic’s compact-car platform, and with that change it has become a larger and more pleasant and refined vehicle. We like the HR-V’s relatively roomy interior, user-friendly controls, and strong fuel economy. But it accelerates slowly, the cabin is noisy, and the ride is stiff. These shortcomings make it a far cry from the Subaru Crosstrek, a main rival.
The 2024 Honda HR-V’s #7 ranking is based on its score within the Subcompact SUVs category. Currently the Honda HR-V has a score of 8.0 out of 10, which is based on our evaluation of 25 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.
Drive and Performance 5.9/10
As expected from a vehicle this size, the 2024 Honda HR-V is easy to pilot in tight quarters, and it has deft maneuverability. It’s surprisingly sporty through turns, with well-controlled body movements and strong braking performance. A pampering ride rounds out this crossover’s solid driving dynamics.
The sole engine offering for the 2024 Honda HR-V is a 158-horsepower four-cylinder, and it’s mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Acceleration from a stop is fine, and the CVT goes about its business with little drama. However, you really need to mash the gas to get up to higher speeds, which causes the powertrain to drone loudly. Zero to 60 mph takes a leisurely 10 seconds.
Fuel Economy 8.5/10
The HR-V’s fuel economy is slightly below average for a subcompact SUV. With standard front-wheel drive, it gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive models return 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway
Interior 8.1/10
The 2024 Honda HR-V is still feeling fresh from its 2023 model year redesign. The cabin is sleek and modern, with cool design touches and a wealth of high-quality materials. Build quality is excellent as well. There’s room for five people inside. The front row is roomy and comfortable, and the driver has good visibility in most directions. Wide doors make for simple access, and the rear seats have enough head- and legroom for adults.
This Honda rates well for cargo space among subcompact SUVs. The HR-V provides 24.4 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats, and these seats fold nearly flat to create a boxy area of 55.1 cubic feet. Loading and unloading is easy as well.
Value 8.7/10
The 2024 Honda HR-V has an average value rating for the subcompact SUV segment. We determine value based on the vehicle’s estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle’s MSRP for its base and top trims.
Safety 9.6/10
The 2024 HR-V gets good overall safety ratings from both the Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The SUV comes standard with a good list of standard driver-assistance features, including lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beam headlights.
For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the HR-V’s rear outboard seats. There’s also a tether anchor for the rear middle seat, and you can borrow lower anchors from either side when they’re not in use. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use, noting that the tether anchor is hard to find.
Quality and Reliability 82.0/100
The 2024 Honda HR-V has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
Critics’ Rating 7.1/10
The 2024 Honda HR-V receives a critics’ rating that is average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.
