Norwegian yard Vard Holdings has secured a contract to build a 181.6 metre research expedition vessel called REV Yacht.

Due for completion in 2020, this imposing vessel will be 0.99 metres longer than Azzam, the world’s largest superyacht. Although it will not be considered as a fully-fledged superyacht, the vessel has been developed in collaboration with leading superyacht designer Espen Øino with interior concept development and realization by h2 yacht design.

Vard Holdings explained that the hull will be built in Romania at its Tulcea facility, before being towed to Brattvaag in Norway for outfitting.

The client is ocean research company Rosellinis Four-10, whose owner Kjell Inge Røkke explained: “REV Yacht will be a platform for gathering knowledge. I would like to welcome researchers, environmental groups, and other institutions on board, to acquire new skills to evolve innovative solutions to address challenges and opportunities connected to the seas.”

Advanced oceanography equipment will be fitted on board, allowing Rosellinis Four-10 to survey marine areas, currents, the seabed, fish, animals and plant life.

As is fitting for such an environmentally conscious project, REV Yacht has been designed to be as fuel efficient as possible, with an energy recovery rudder system, medium speed engines, a direct drive diesel-electric propulsion system, and an exhaust cleaning system.

Other key on-board features include a multifunctional cargo deck and storage for the autonomous submersible, as well as laboratories and an auditorium. Accommodation is for 36 guests and 54 crewmembers, while the maximum beam is 22 metres.

Roy Reite, CEO and Executive Director of Vard Holdings, added: “We are excited and humbled to be chosen as the partner to develop and build this unique vessel. This new-build project also offers an excellent opportunity to showcase the innovation power of the Norwegian maritime industry by involving many local suppliers.”
